Which ranks have Boards of Review?

Tenderfoot (approx. 15-20 minutes in length)

2nd Class (approx. 15-20 minutes in length)

1st Class (approx. 20 minutes in length)

Star Rank (approx. 20 minutes in length)

Life Rank (approx. 20-30 minutes in length)

Eagle Rank (approx. 30-50 minutes in length)

and the Eagle Palms (approx. 15 minutes in length)

The Board of Review is an opportunity for the scout to develop and practice interviewing skills and review his accomplishments. It is not a retesting of requirements - the scout has already been tested and signed off on those requirements.

Who serves on a Board of Review?

For all ranks (except Eagle) and Eagle palms, the Board of Review consists of three to six members of the Troop Committee. The Troop Advancement Chairperson typically acts as the chairperson of the Board of Review. Relatives or guardians may not serve as members of a Scout's Board of Review. Unit leaders (Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmasters) may not participate in a Board of Review.

For the rank of Eagle, the Board of Review consists of three to six members drawn from Scouting and the community. The members of the Board of Review are selected by district depending on the council guidelines.
Sample question booklets can be found on the advancement page to give the scout and parent an idea of what to expect at a Board of Review.

During the first year the Scout works on Tenderfoot, Second and First Class requirements at the same time.

You can use a form called First Class -- First Year Tracking sheet #34118 to keep track where you are on the Advancement Trail.

Board of Reviews are held after Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life and Eagle. Parents are encouraged to help on other Scout Boards of Review but may not serve on their sons.
